See more Art by Dominique Return to Artists' Page Dominique Haas Dominique Haas has dedicated nearly 20 years to the revival of a forgotten art. He began sculpting in leather while living in the Dominican Republic. He left his home in France in the mid 1980's for a simpler and sunnier life in the Caribbean. Before moving to Mexico in 1993, he live for a time in Haiti, Dominican Republic (where he met his lovely wife, Inez), Jamaica and Cuba. During his 11 year residence in Mexico, he has traveled extensively, mostly to the central highlands to buy the fine leather needed for his work. His technique is neither Caribbean nor Mexican, but a craft practiced in ancient Rome. True to tradition, Dominique specially prepares the leather and later shapes each mask from one seamless piece. He works alone in a small rustic studio attached to his house in Progreso Puerto on the Yucatan coast. Some of his more elaborate sculptures require weeks or even months to complete. His work has been shown in galleries in the U.S. and Canada. Collectors from as distant as South Africa, Iceland, and Pakistan have purchased his work.
